When it comes to delicious tasting foods that also happen to be super healthy, smoothies, with no doubt, are among the top ten.

Being loaded primarily with fruits (and sometimes veggies), they’re not only sweet, but also super nutritious and loaded with good nutrients that’ll keep you healthy, in both body and mind.

And if regular smoothies don’t quite do it for you in terms of satisfaction, then smoothie bowls are your perfect go to option.

They’re just like smoothies, but thicker, more like an actual “meal”, and way more satisfying.

Making the perfect smoothie bowl to satisfy your cravings, and start your day right is also a super easy thing to do.

Here, you’ll discover some tips and tricks on how to build the perfect smoothie bowl, as well as 20 super delicious smoothie bowl recipes you’re going to want to keep trying.

Let’s dive in.

Building The Perfect Smoothie Bowl

Building The Perfect Smoothie Bowl

While regular smoothies are totally wonderful, you might be thinking about taking things to the next level. That’s when you get to these bowls of goodness.

With the smoothie bowl, you get to choose from a wide variety of combinations and flavors, and the possibilities are almost endless. The basic steps are pretty much similar to your regular smoothie, with just a few tweaks here and there.

You’ll have the

  • Liquid base
  • Main ingredients
  • Sweetener
  • Toppings

Liquid Base

There are lots of options to choose from when picking the liquid for your bowl, and it’ll generally depend on your preference. Popular smoothie liquid options include;

  • Water –
  • Milk
  • Coconut water
  • Fresh juice
  • Watermelon slices/watermelon water

Water, is the easiest to use because, well, duh. Next is milk. Regular dairy milk works fine. However, if you’re lactose intolerant, or vegan, you can always opt in for other options such as nut based milk (almond milk, cashew milk, hemp milk and so on).

Options like soy milk and rice milk can also be used if you’re trying to steer clear of dairy and nut allergies.

Coconut water also works great, and has a flavor you can really come to enjoy in your smoothie. Alternatively, you can use fresh juice, from oranges, lemons, grapes, etc.

Since watermelons are about 90% water, using watermelon slices is also another great idea.

Although one thing to keep in mind, when choosing your liquid, is that you certainly don’t want to overdo it. The goal is to create a thick smoothie bowl, so you want to avoid adding too much liquid, or else it comes out too watery.

Some people like to add in yoghurt, which although isn’t exactly a “liquid”, is a great idea if you want a thicker smoothie. Greek yoghurt is a good and equally healthy example.

Main Ingredients

This is where the main experimentation happens, and your options are almost endless, depending on what you want.

You could choose from a variety of fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds and more. The fruits are where the natural sweetness of the smoothie comes from.

Berries, bananas pineapples, apples, etc. are good options. You’ll see bananas recommended a lot because apart from their great taste and nutritional benefits, they also add thickness to the smoothie. Ice cubes can also be added for thickness.

Veggies are another nutritional powerhouse, and they offer tons of health benefits. Even if you don’t exactly like tasting veggies in your smoothies (I don’t think most people do), you can still enjoy them by adding more fruits, or a little sweetener.

Avocados, nuts and seeds are high in healthy fats and protein, and can help you feel more satiated, for longer. You can also give your smoothie bowl a protein boost by throwing in some protein powder.

Sweeteners

Pretty much the same with your regular smoothies. Most fruits add a natural level of sweetness, so you might not really need to add in sweeteners.

However, if you need to add in some sweeteners, honey, dates and maple syrup are always good options. If you’re on a low carb diet, and can’t have much of these sweeteners, try using some carb-free options like stevia, erythritol and monk fruit.

Toppings

This is what separates most smoothie bowls from regular smoothies.

Although toppings are completely optional, adding them gives you something more to “chew”, giving your smoothie bowl a more solid kick, as opposed to the normal “drink” ideology of regular smoothies.

Plus, toppings can go a long way in keeping you full, since they’re solid and will take a longer time to break down, than if they had already been processed in the blender.

Popular topping options include Nuts and seeds, sliced fruits, coconut flakes, etc.
